The SureFoot Winter Walking Conditions Bulletin is the world’s first program aimed at reducing injuries caused by falls on ice and snow through daily public bulletins.  These daily bulletins provide information about foot travel conditions and related safety precautions. We hope this information will help residents make safer decisions when venturing out on foot.

In 2010 – 2011, 7,138 Canadians were admitted to hospital due to falling on ice.  This is more than for all winter sports and recreational activities combined. About half of these cases occurred in people age 60 and older and about 70% were 50 years of age and older.*

In Winnipeg, there are about 2,000 fall-related hospitalizations among adults 65 years and older each year.  In fact, 90% of all hip fractures are caused by a fall, with an average cost of $15,000.  Falls cause considerable suffering for the injured individuals and their families. The outcome can be very serious and often results in loss of confidence.**  If the SureFoot program prevents just one broken hip, it will save thousands of dollars in healthcare costs and prevent needless suffering.
